A long time ago in a place not far from here, Annie Clifford woke up sweaty from a dream: The Marquee Club in Halifax was jam-packed with her good pals, all playing along on the big stage together, singing a song about the goodness of life. With a fiddle in hand, Annie sought out some willing collaborators to turn this dream into reality. Kingston, Ontario’s The Gertrudes were born.
Over the next 15 years, The Gertrudes continued to create, perform, and experiment with this down-home folkestra. Taking inspiration from artists like Wilco, The Guthries, and The National, The Gertrudes knit together a sound like an old-time saloon party travelling through deep space. Together this versatile collective produced three full length albums, two EPS, participated in numerous festivals (notably Vancouver Folk Festival, Pop Montreal, Halifax Pop Explosion), and performed countless shows, sharing the stage with artists like Sarah Harmer, Calexico, and Ricky Skaggs. They even made it to the steps of the Marquee Club; it was closed.
Recently The Gertrudes added co-producer and banjo picker Jason Mercer (Ani DiFranco, Ron Sexsmith) to join their collaborative community spirit and help to merge a manic collection of choirs, symphonies, and fiddle tunes, resulting in their latest album, Emergency to Emergency, (slated for a Fall 2021 release) - a musical celebration of sorrow, anxiety and hope.
One of these days, they’ll make it back to The Marquee Club and be able to share the stage with all of their good pals. Hopefully this time it’ll be open.
